FASHION CAN BE FUN… REVIEW OF SS18 AT LFW

London Fashion Week was five days of fabulousness. With all the usual heavyweights showcasing their collections, whether it be by catwalk, film or presentation- we even poached Tommy Hilfiger  from New York!

As expected, there were the outrageously impractical cuffs, summer sequins, larger than life ruffles and anoraks on display. Yup, the Great British summer essential is now making waves, or at least puddles on the runway… Even the Queen’s timeless style was immortalised at the Bora Aksu show.

My personal favourites were (as usual), Ashish and his Witch logo top,

for summer sequins, and Osman for something (everything) pretty.  Matty Bovan who showcased at Fashion East, let loose with a colouring box and created a collection fit for a modern art gallery. Jasper Conran is the label to look to for understated sportswear, and Markus Lupfer not only presented with a gorgeous sausage dog, his patterns, knits and crochet combos are on my lust list. And don’t get me started on his sunglasses! With Christopher Kane tickig all my boxes for oversized monochrome.

Nicola Formichetti’s Nicopanda offered a cutesy selection of pastel pinks, albeit in PVC dungarees, and ruffled shirts. Even conservative stalwart, Paul Costelloe showcased his classic models in clashing red and pink PVC (no less!). The male models complemented this in a range of wedding ready suits- with the pastel rainbow two piece gaining a round of applause!

Bum bags are back at House of Holland along with a ninety ravers vibe, and if you have the figure for it, squeeze into one of Donatella Versace’s Vogue print catsuits…if they are good enough for the original supers…! (shown in Milan, but loved everywhere…) Newbie designer Billie Jacobina hit the spot with skateboarding girls and prints to dazzle in her Fashion Scout presentation.

However, if you are looking something more aherm, refined, the eighties were leading the way at Ashley Williams with tiger print twin sets, and blue hair! The eighties also cropped up at the off-schedule shows including Irene Sj Yu (tiger print, crop tops, ruffles and lacing).

For a touch of Anne of Green Gables, kit yourself out in the best ruffles you can buy, and check out Preen, Fyodor Golan, HAIZHEN WANG  and Marques’ Almeida. Pretty, floaty and flirty, let’s just hope we get some sunshine to show these pretties off!

And when you have something to hide, you might be tempted to try one of the bustle dresses from Erdem, Mary Katrantzou or Simone Rocha who have taken inspiration from Balenciaga; With versions of the iconic bubble dress- which might look extremely pretty, but ain’t gonna be easy to run for a bus in!

More wearable collections, and something who for those who are looking to invest in something practical should definitely take note of Sharon Wauchob- with a collection of (majoritively sleek lines), the trouser suits, oversized macs and boots are a dream!

If you like me, like suits, Eudon Choi is the guy to go to for an oversized pink option, and Daks are channelling a pinstripe (schoolgirl) vibe! If you love a bit of lilac, get thee to Joseph for lilac and checks, and remember you can mix and match!

Whether you are a glamour puss, or a sport billy, there is no doubt you can find something you fancy in London’s fabulous talent. Enjoy and happy shopping.

London Fashion Week AW17

Comments Off on London Fashion Week AW17 fashion, fblogger, my words, news, sara darling, womenswear styling

LFW : My Fashion Editor’s Picks

London is a stylish city, there is no doubt about it, and it is always a pleasure to be one of the lucky ones to get to see the collections on the catwalks and earmark the trends for press.

There is never one trend to come out of the shows, there is always something for everyone, and if I had to pick my faves, they would include

Tartan

Embrace your prim and proper side, as seen at Mulberry and Preen, you don’t need to be a librarian, to enjoy this trend. In fact, let that hair down and embrace what else you can get up to in an office!

Cowgirls

Double denim has always been a credible choice for the fashpack, and AW will see embellished denim, fringed shirts and oversized leather. And if you shop at House of Holland, all you need is a mule!

Cartoons for girls

Boys have been enjoying the cartoon character embellishments for the past few seasons, but with SpongeBob Squarepants celebrating his 15th birthday, Nickelodeon snapped up some of the hottest designers for a collaboration- check out Peter Jensen and Bobby Abley for their take. With Mary Katrantzou utilising Disney’s Fantasia, an House of Holland working Woody the Woodpecker on to the back of some rather fetching denim jackets.

The hills are alive with the sound of peasants

If you are over the bell sleeve, fear not, the new sleeve is all about the peasant! And why you’re at it, why not add some serious lacing and a pair of very impractical shoes, and you can channel your inner milkmaid.

It’ll be all bright on the night

Fyodor Golan opened Fashion Week with a selection of ice l0lly hued catsuits, apparently inspired by the Powerpuff Girls and the humble Post It note! And if you are a glass half full kind of woman, you will probably already be in the queue for the in yer face colour blocking at Roksanda and Ryan Lo. You might want to tone the make up down. Or perhaps you might not!

Self Styled: The Book That Says It All

Comments Off on Self Styled: The Book That Says It All art, fashion, fblogger, my words, review, womenswear styling

If you ever wanted to be a stylist, this book is worth a look.

It’s been a while coming, but when I get a picture book, I like to enjoy the pictures! So when the beautiful hard back “Self.Styled Dare to be Different” arrived in my Christmas stocking, I was keen to savour the images.

self_styled_book_anthony_lycett

A 250 page turner by photographer Anthony Lycett showcases his pick of the most stylish urbanites. The not so shy and retiring subjects who (in most cases are non models) were asked to bring and pose in their choice of daywear, and evening wear. With no magazine stylist involved, the unique personal outfit choices are mesmerising.

With double page shoots for each model, colour, body shape and taste are explored to the max, and if you like to consume street style as I do, you become mesmerised by the masterpieces.

Working with a diverse range of eccentric personalities including David Carter (hotelier and purveyor of whimsical magical experiences), Anett-Patrice Van York, Art Director and Photographer (who settled for a skeleton outfit) through to Brighton’s own Atters Attree, who is mostly known for his penny farthing bicycle antics, the sartorial choices are far from meek, and Anthony is keen to show how they represent themselves to the public.

Providing a cultural reference point for the twenty-teen century, it shows that fashion is a personal choice, and how being individual is the only way to survive; With personal anecdotes to accompany the images, there is no doubt that it pays off if you dare to be different.

What’s your story?

FARFETCH IS EVERYTHING I NEED FOR MY SUMMER WISHLIST

FASHION PACKING FOR SUMMER TRIPS

I’m sorry to have to remind you that summer is nearly on it’s way out what with Midsummer’s Day in the middle of next week- and it doesn’t even feel like it’s started yet!

But this is where my smug face comes on, as my summer is actually just beginning with three trips (and time for more) on the horizon!

I have been lucky enough to be asked to attend a charity cycle ride in Lake Garda next weekend.. It’s not a long weekend of cycling for me (thank goodness!) but I will be taking part, along with soaking up the scenery and sampling the delicious Italian food, all to raise awareness for #WorldAwarenessDay

I’m very much looking forward to the downtime at the 4* Parc Hotel Paradiso resort too- so these looks that are inspired by the Farfetch Content Pack, would be perfect:

These cut off jeans shorts by Alexander Wang, are a summer essential, matched with a white Alexander McQueen off the shoulder top. I would match with the unusual Golden Goose white trainers for a more sophisticated version of the Sam Smith!

For lounging by the pool, I am obsessed by this Missoni bandeau bikini- no tan lines for me! And in keeping with this summer’s colour- I love the burnt orange maxi dress by Maria Lucia Hohan which is full of le dolce vita, and will look amazing for evening cocktails. The icing on the cake will be these Mykita shades. Big enough to make a statement, but cool enough to go with everything!

I’ve also got a weekend coming up to St Moritz.. A very different kind of break, so I need something sophisticated, versatile and easy to pop into my hand luggage as I will be chauffeured around in an convertible car! Black is the perfect choice and I will be able to add some statement shoes, hence me lusting after these:

For the icing on the cake, I will be off to Budapest for a music festival in August. With Rihanna topping the bill at the Sziget, I need to look HoT HoT HoT!

Festivals are known to be muddy, but I am hoping that Hungary will behave itself, however practical packing will be key. I love the boho vibe of the Chloe dress, and the simplicity of the black (natch!) T by Alexander Wang. Both will go with the uber cool military D Squared boots, and I will colour clash with the Versace jacket. When night falls I will wrap up in some trusty AG jeans and love this asymmetric white top. And keeping the traditional festival vibe I will have the snakeskin bikini and leopard Car shoes ready to pounce!

The bralette that the starlettes wear at LFW

Comments Off on The bralette that the starlettes wear at LFW fashion, my words, news, review, Stylist, womenswear styling

Remember LFW- that hotbed of excitement which took place in our Soho playground a mere three weeks ago?!

If you were paying attention, you might have noticed that mixing it up, is the key to making a statement for AW16; And flashing flesh for AW will be de rigeur if you are slim of hip. It played a huge role within the McQueen, House of Holland and Topshop Unique.

You can shop the cute as a button bralette used in the House of Holland collection, and re-create your own version of “Backstage Flappers”.  With an inventive design of decade mash up, the collection used the pixie bralette in looks inspired by the roaring twenties and flamboyant 70s (with a little bit of 80s spangle thrown in for good measure) proving the underwear as outerwear has legs whatever your favourite era! Are you rock n roll enough?

Roland Mouret goes back to the 70s

Comments Off on Roland Mouret goes back to the 70s fashion, my words, review, womenswear styling

Roland Mouret is a designer who knows what women want. This year, is the tenth anniversary of his acclaimed Galaxy dress, and it’s no wonder that the design has stood the test of time. Classic yet sophisticated, it is a comfort blanket for women across the world.

For Spring Summer 16, Mouret has re-invented the shape and outlook, taking inspiration from ‘Aujourd’hui Madame’ a French television programme from the early 70s. The collection is stuffed with louche 70s references- mid length hemlines, bias cut skirts, and paisley jacquard, to enhance the relaxed hipster mood.

Separates are key with Bardot tops mixed with tiered ruffled skirts, halter necks, peephole shoulders and and wide legged trousers provide a sensuous collection ready for a long hot summer.

To enhance the collection, there is also  a capsule range of five limited edition pieces to celebrate 10 years of the Galaxy dress: The Galaxy top, skirt, jacket and jumpsuit will sit alongside the infamous dress, creating the all-encompassing wardrobe for the Roland Mouret woman.

The Galaxy has legs and long may it reign!

FCUK: Now I have your attention!

Comments Off on FCUK: Now I have your attention! fashion, menswear, my words, news, Stylist, womenswear styling

The high street store French Connection is always a fail safe pitstop for party wear and separates. I’ve never considered it a port of call when I want to look particulary edgy, there have been plenty of other options for a quick fix.

However in the last couple of seasons, the undercurrent of va-va-voom is making it’s way into the denim, florals and comfortable cord combos, and now the next gen boys and girls can take inspiration from the up and coming trend-setters, carefully chosen to represnt 2016.

The SS16 collection is turning back the clock and has taken inspiration from 90s grunge. If anyone is old enough to remember the cult movie Trainspotting, Kelly MacDonald’s character Diane was a bit of a fashion slave and wore a range of classic sequin dresses. Along with patterned trackie tops, bucket hats and Cool Britannia macs, the styling is designed to be mashed and clashed up, and is an Instagrammer’s dream!

Keeping it real, the talent fronting the campaign includes British singer/songwriter, #WillHeard who is currently touring with Rudimental,  Argentinean born, NY based artist #ConieVallese, Parisian Model and actress, #AngieSherbourne, Polish model #CocoKate and British model and self-proclaimed ‘artist in training’ #WilsonOryema

A hurdle away from the pretty pretty that I remember, I can forsee a trip down memory lane in more ways than one.
