LEGENDS OF THE SANDBAR on your coffee table

No Comments 55Factory, art, lifestyle, my words, review, travel

Legends of the Sandbar by Christopher Bickford

If you ever needed an excuse to learn how to surf, this coffee table book is it! However, this is not just a picture book- even though it contains some of the most stunning images of surf culture that I have seen.

Photographer and author Christopher Bickford, has made a home for himself in the sleepy Outer Banks in North Carolina, and uses it as a base to surf, write and collect documentary images. His book Legends of the Sandbar is an insider’s view of life on the Banks.

LHOUETTE ‘POST URBAN GLAMOUR’ art for the twenty first century

No Comments art, blogger, hotel, lblogger, my words, news

POST URBAN GLAMOUR AT 45 PARK LANE

Street art is no longer the bane of the city councillor’s life- forever being bleached off walls, only to return like annoying funghi.

lhouette_45parklane

The transient nature of the fast paced lives we are leading, and the popular culture references that litter our lives, are steadily being transformed into works of art.

The latest collection by artist Lhouette is case in point. Taking some of society’s most recognisable symbols and popular culture creations, he has worked them into beautifully juxtaposed artworks.

The boy from Luton works figurines from his youth, including Officer Dibble, Top Cat and Luke Skywalker into a pastiche of commentary on urban life.

With large and smaller scale assets to his collection, you can see the current exhibition at London’s premiere art hotel, 45 Park Lane. Enjoy the atmosphere, and a cocktail, and if you are considering building up your own treasures of contemporary art, all pieces are available to buy in limited edition until March 26th.

Self Styled: The Book That Says It All

No Comments art, fashion, fblogger, my words, review, womenswear styling

If you ever wanted to be a stylist, this book is worth a look.

It’s been a while coming, but when I get a picture book, I like to enjoy the pictures! So when the beautiful hard back “Self.Styled Dare to be Different” arrived in my Christmas stocking, I was keen to savour the images.

A 250 page turner by photographer Anthony Lycett showcases his pick of the most stylish urbanites. The not so shy and retiring subjects who (in most cases are non models) were asked to bring and pose in their choice of daywear, and evening wear. With no magazine stylist involved, the unique personal outfit choices are mesmerising.

With double page shoots for each model, colour, body shape and taste are explored to the max, and if you like to consume street style as I do, you become mesmerised by the masterpieces.

Working with a diverse range of eccentric personalities including David Carter (hotelier and purveyor of whimsical magical experiences), Anett-Patrice Van York, Art Director and Photographer (who settled for a skeleton outfit) through to Brighton’s own Atters Attree, who is mostly known for his penny farthing bicycle antics, the sartorial choices are far from meek, and Anthony is keen to show how they represent themselves to the public.

Providing a cultural reference point for the twenty-teen century, it shows that fashion is a personal choice, and how being individual is the only way to survive; With personal anecdotes to accompany the images, there is no doubt that it pays off if you dare to be different.

What’s your story?

PETER LINDBERGH AT THE KUNSTHAL, ROTTERDAM

No Comments art, fashion, flush magazine, my words, review, sara darling, travel

Imagine Father Christmas, complete with white beard and little round specs, but instead of the red onesie and little helpers, envisage a smiley, rosy cheeked gent in a baseball cap, surrounded by leggy blonde models and you might be somewhere close to the larger than life character and celebrated photographer Peter Lindbergh.
